Films
In the Winter of 2016 students in a Contemporary Urban Issues course within Portland State University's School of Architecture explored the themes of the course (emerging urban characteristics, comparative design strategies, and the integration of design approaches with the processes of economic and social change) by making a series of short films in the context of the historical and contemporary experiences and productions of black residents of the Portland metropolitan area. Research (an interview with a black resident/business owner, the finding of historic or contemporary maps and/or images, contemporary or historic data/census analysis) was required for successful completion of each film.
Below are the products of the students' efforts.
*It should be stressed that these experiences and productions are plural and that no one historical or contemporary black person represents the urbanism of the whole. That being said, students were strongly encouraged to be specific in focus for each film in order to avoid generalizations.
